I have lived in Washington, D.C. for six years, after growing up in Columbia, South Carolina and Philadelphia. I have a bachelor's degree in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and am currently pursuing my masters in Sustainable Energy Engineering. I have always had a passion for environmental issues, and am currently working as a contractor for the U.S. EPA.

My tutoring experience extends back to high school, where I often tutored peers and underclassmen. In college, I was a Teaching Assistant at a summer program where high school students took engineering courses for college credit. I was also a counselor for a summer camp that taught middle school girls about engineering, math, and science. It was inspiring to see these young girls interested in and passionate about learning new things.

I love to help others learn, explore their passions, and gain the skills they need to meet their professional and educational goals. I look forward to working with you or your students!

Q & A

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Gain an understanding of their goals for the tutoring program, along with their strengths and topic areas they find challenging. I would also try to determine which method of instruction will resonate with the student.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By teaching them the skills for problem solving, which will give them the tools they need to think through problems and solutions.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Patience; being flexible enough to try out different ways to communicate and teach; and to be realistic with respect to outcomes, keeping in mind the student's strengths and goals.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Ask conceptual questions to test knowledge and walk through practice problems. I also find that asking a student to explain concepts back to me as if I know nothing really helps someone understand all facets of a topic.
