What is your teaching philosophy?
I primarily focus on relating the material to a student's interests. I believe that with enough explanation, everyone can learn just about anything, and once I get to understand the level a student is at we can build from there together.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I will try and understand what their goals are. The focus will be to try and understand what they actually understand and lay out a plan to meet their goals.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
By trying to show them the importance of what they are learning. If I can relate a subject or problem to the student's long term goals, it has a huge impact on their motivation.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would slowly unravel the problem into smaller pieces and explain it them one by one. It is important to understand the roadblocks and address them one by one.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I think the most important thing is to try and relate the subject to their interests; this seems to increase motivation in the students. Additionally, it is important to understand the roadblocks and address them in a comprehensive manner.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I will focus on helping them find appropriate resources and becoming confident in their own abilities.
