I am, first and foremost, a husband and father, my family is everything. I have been married to my wife for 8 years and I have an amazing 4 year old son.
I grew up the oldest of 7 children and was the first in my family to go to college. I received my bachelor's degree from Sam Houston State University in May 2008 with a major in Academic Studies and a minor in Special Education. After a few years I went back to school and graduated with my Master's degree from Stephen F. Austin University in December 2014 in Educational Leadership.
I am currently an assistant principal at a 5th-6th grade campus, but I have spent most of my time as a special education and/or math teacher.
In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family, running, hiking, playing golf, fishing, coaching/playing sports watching movies, and listening to music.
I truly enjoy being an educator and love helping student find their passion for learning and helping them discover that they are capable of amazing things.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

I have always believed that everybody is capable of learning.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

My 1st session will be a getting to know you session where the student and I will have an opportunity to meet each other and find out what our goals and expectations will be. We will then look at what they find the most confusing and how we can work together to find the answer.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By having them explain to me the process in which they answer the questions and explain their understanding.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By finding what they love and helping them set personal goals for themselves to reach.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I try to look at the problem from a different angle and see what could be troubling them. I find a new way to teach the concept.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I break down each part of the story. When working with the student, I have them focus on little parts that will guide them to the bigger picture.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Always be positive, never talk down to a student, never lower expectations, and set goals.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Find a way for the student to make a personal connection with the subject.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I always have the student verbally explain to me what they did to find the correct answer.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By creating success for them and showing them that they are able to learn.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By listening to them as they work and paying attention as they show their work.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

No two students are the same, so I will not tutor any of my students the same way. Each one will receive personalized tutoring sessions each time.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Hands-on household manipulatives, videos, music, whiteboards, etc.
