I am a senior at Ohio State. I am an actuarial science major and a business minor. For those who don't know, actuaries work for insurance companies and are the people who quantify risk. I chose to major in actuarial science because math has always been my favorite subject. I like the challenging and problem solving aspects of the major. I have taken a number of math classes in my college career and look forward to showing other students how to be successful in those classes!
In my free time, I like to stay active through playing sports and working out. I grew up in Cincinnati and was big into soccer and track in high school. Needless to say, I am a very big Bengals and Buckeyes fan!

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

The best way to be successful is through practice. I apply this philosophy to school. Through practice problems, you can tell which areas you need help in and which ones you don't. By doing enough practice problems, you can master the subject you are studying.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

First we would go over the sections they are struggling with. Once they feel okay with that section, we will move on and do practice problems until they are completely comfortable with it.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I will show them how I have been successful in class. My philosophy has always been that it is better to understand the material than to memorize how to do the problems. I will try to get the student to think with this mindset.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I will try to get them to see the big picture. At times school may seem tough, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel that every student can reach if they are willing to put in the effort.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Practice problems. The best way to master any skill is through practice.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I try to get them to think logically. A lot of trouble with reading comprehension comes from over-thinking the question. I will get them to trust themselves and not over-think the questions.
