What is your teaching philosophy?
Teaching should be done in a way where the student is provided with facts and stimulated to think for themselves towards a solution. And, of course, guidance should be provided along the way
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Trust should be established with the student, and an assessment of the level of the student on the subject should be done.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I can help the student by providing the basic facts on the topic and stimulating the thinking of the student by asking suitable questions towards a solution.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Interest of the student in the subject should be sustained by making them understand how it would help them with real-world problems when they do well in the subject.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Repetition and helping the student focus. Also helping the student approach a concept in micro-steps instead of a single mega-step.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I haven't taught reading comprehension to students, so I wouldn't know.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Helping the student stay focused by actively engaging them with questions and stimulating their thinking.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
By making them understand how mastering the subject will help them to tackle or apply the subject concepts to real-world problems.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Dividing a problem into micro-steps and making them logically understand the concept.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Encouragement and recognition of every little progress that the student makes in understanding the subject.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Assessment of the student on the subject, and understanding the style of learning of the student.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Some students are kinesthetic learners and some are not. Some need to be stimulated with questions, whereas others might need to be left to work on the problem by themselves. During the first two or three sessions, the style of learning of the student needs to be understood.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Curriculum appropriate materials - homeschool materials and other online resources.
