John

My name is John Carey, I'm a graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison who got married and moved out to Colorful Colorado. I have been tutoring and teaching kids, from elementary school to high school, in all kinds of subjects from Algebra to Shakespeare to AP test prep for the last ten years. I have a very methodical and Socratic approach to tutoring. I try to lead a student to a greater understanding of the material through probing questions and conversation. I have found that this results in a broader knowledge base, an increased interest in the subject, and a student who doesn't just 'beat the test', but someone who knows the correct answer to the question and why it's correct and more.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I advocate a Socratic approach to tutoring. Through probing questions and conversation, I try to lead a student to a greater understanding of the material. This results in a broader knowledge base, an increased interest in the subject, and a student who doesn't just 'beat the test,' but someone who knows the correct answer to a question and why it's correct-- and more besides.
