What is your teaching philosophy?

To help a student learn and master their challenging school subjects.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know the student and their outlook on the work that we are going to take on.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By encouraging the student to attempt the studies on their own and only seeking help when they are stumped.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By constantly encouraging them with the positive results they will achieve with their hard work.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Ask them for their input and find the break in the process that they are attempting.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Encourage them to slow down and comprehend what they are reading. Also, write down and look up words that they don't know or understand.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Befriending them and not trying to be an authority figure.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Tell them about the advantages of learning the subject and taking it with them on a daily basis.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Ask for feedback. After a student completes a task, I would like them to summarize what they have just conquered.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Consistency. If they constantly know they are completing the assignments successfully, I believe that helps their confidence.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By observing them.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I determine what they need and how to go about accomplishing the work they bring to the table.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Paper and pencil, and occasionally a computer.
