Helping others is one of my passions, and the people I've helped during my 15 years of tutoring is one of my proudest accomplishments. My philosophy is to create an environment of collaboration and safety where questions are encouraged. We start with the basic concepts and then break them down in a personalized style based upon their individual learning style and tied into their experiences and world view.

My education includes a BS in Biological Sciences/Psychology with minors in Chemistry and Philosophy as well as an MD/MA in Bioethics. Besides my tutoring experience, I've worked for 10 years as a biochemist/molecular biologist in basic research, and presented my work at international academic meetings.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My students and I work together to teach concepts first, then facts.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know my student as a person; what are their hobbies, interests, and goals? We also talk about learning strategies they have tried in the past.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

We work to find ways to make, identify and work around their difficulties. Whether that's by helping them to identify how a topic ties into personal interests or to break material down depends upon the student.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I work on keeping the focus on minimizing frustration and helping them keep a positive attitude.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

We work together to identify and work on their core area of difficulty, tackling that first. We work on being efficient, but give the topic all the time that it needs.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

The key part is practice, with acknowledgement of success and identification and work on difficult areas. Then we continue to work on successes with continued practice.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Personalization and positivity are keys of my tutoring. I find it helpful to have a student try to teach me a topic so that I can identify difficult concepts, and then we fill in the gaps together. I also keep the atmosphere positive and encourage progress towards goals just as much as meeting goals themselves.
