I received my BA in Physics and Mathematics from Washington University in St. Louis (WashU) in 2015. I will be working at the Max-Planck Institute for Astrophysics from October 2015 to August 2016 after which I will be working on my Ph.D in astronomy at the University of Arizona. While at WashU I tutored the introductory physics courses for three years. I have extensive experience with tutoring introductory high school and college level physics courses.

My tutoring style is very malleable, and I attempt to adjust my style to each person I tutor on an individual basis. If you learn best from real world examples, then I will try my best to use everyday objects/situations or find a relevant video online to help you connect the ideas. If you are the type of student who wants to understand the conceptual foundation of a problem before tackling it, I can go over the theoretical basis with you. If you are having difficulty understanding which method or which equation to use for problems, then I will provide suggestions and show many examples for each method/equation. If you need a little bit of everything, then I can do that too. I work best if I understand where you personally are struggling. If you are aware of where your understanding wanders or your execution falters, then communicating that to me will help me help you.

I do not believe that any student who comes to me is incapable of understanding the material. I believe that the education system is indeed flawed which means that some students have an unfair advantage over others when it comes to exams and standardized tests. All I am trying to do is even the balance and provide you with the confidence and ability that you need to succeed. If I am also able to convince you that the universe is full of wonders and not in the least bit boring, then that is one huge bonus.

Q & A

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In the first session, my goal is to understand your personal learning style. It is also to understand what material you are comfortable with doing, and what material you need help with understanding.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

My job is not to do every problem for you and then to show you how I did it. I will go through a problem step-by-step with you, and let you work it out until you don't know how to proceed. At that point, I will ask questions or offer suggestions to help get the ball rolling, but I will not finish the problem for you. To become an independent learner, you need to learn how to ask the right questions when you see a problem, and I will help you do that.
