I received a B.S. in Computer Science from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and a Certificate of Interactive Technology from the Guildhall at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.
With my background, I enjoy and am adept at tutoring in the areas of computer science and programming, particularly in C++ and Java.
During my undergrad, I took a part-time job as a study session leader for four years. This entailed helping students in introductory computer science courses. A majority of the time was spent facilitating group discussion and learning with the remainder focused on individuals’ progress and personalized problem solving.
Through my experience, I developed a tutoring philosophy that is very student-centered. Particularly with computer science, students may understand the subject in a variety of different ways. As such, I have learned to accommodate each student’s learning style to better enable their own understanding of the subject. However, I always encourage a hands-on approach with a majority of my students. As opposed to me directly repeating information that their teacher/professor might give them in-class, I like to approach learning with workshop-like problems that will directly apply the student’s knowledge. This allows the student to make inquiries to strengthen their knowledge and independent problem solving skills while giving me the opportunity to establish tutoring-methods best suited for the student.
When I am away from work and tutoring, I enjoy a number of activities. Due to my background I have multiple nerd-centric hobbies including gaming (both board and video), movie watching, and comic book reading. Additionally, Star Wars is the most magnificent concept ever conceived, and I enjoy it dearly :) Aside from those fun fields, I also enjoy taking advantage of all that Southern California has to offer. I love going to the beach to swim and paddleboard. I enjoy visiting Big Bear with my friends at their lake cabin. And Disneyland is always a fun place to hangout!
