I will be graduating from the University of Oregon with a major in Geography and a minor in Anthropology. I am currently studying for the LSAT and look forward to attending Law school in the near future.

I have been an academic tutor since I was in high school. I first worked as a Math and Reading tutor for students ranging in age from 4 years old to 19 years old, but have also worked with upper division Math and Reading students. I now tutor subjects such as Geography, Anthropology, English, Comparative Literature, Writing, Sociology, and Ethnic Studies.

What makes me a great tutor is that I am very personable, patient, and attentive. Each student's learning style is different, and I accommodate his/her specific learning style in my tutoring sessions. I have both been a tutor and tutee, which I believe gives me an advantage to working with students. I am relatable, which really helps me understand not only the material, but also where students are struggling. I have noticed that the students that I work with are comfortable working with me and asking questions because I tell them I have been tutored before and understand it's not that they cannot learn material, but that tutoring is about having an extra person to explain difficult material with and further progress the learning process. I also get along with others well and I believe I create a welcoming learning environment.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

Working with students based on their learning ability and strengths. I work to help students comprehend information based on how they learn best, so the student can use those skills themselves in the future. Rather than just helping students "get through homework" so they can turn it in on time, I like to create ways of fully learning the material that best suit each individual student.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I like to take a few minutes to get to know the student, including their likes and dislikes (that are not educational). I feel that building somewhat of a relationship is important for trust between the tutor and student. I also would ask them: what they feel they struggle with most in school? What is most difficult? What challenges them the most? Then, I would have them pick out something to do regarding the subject so I can evaluate their learning style, and I can focus the tutoring to their personal best advantage.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I focus on their specific, individual learning styles and create lessons that help each student learn to their advantage, so they can use those learning techniques to study independently.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Positive reinforcement. I like to make an effort to reiterate that struggling through work doesn't prove that the student is incapable of the work presented but that they can learn it and master the material. I also like to tell the student that I have been tutored as well (for LSAT studying and Math when I was younger). I find that it helps the student feel more motivated because they feel that they can be successful.
