Martine

I received a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from The College of New Rochelle. I also obtained a Master's degree in Elementary Education with a focus on reading and literacy from Walden University and a specialist degree in education from Lesley University with a focus on arts integration. I have always loved working with children. I have been an elementary school teacher for the past 13 years. I have taught kindergarten, first, second, and third grade. I enjoy teaching and tutoring students in all subjects, but I have a special interest in teaching reading and writing since those are two passions of mine. I have a lot of experience working one on one with students and have helped many of my students make large gains academically by utilizing a variety of teaching strategies suited to my students' learning styles. I believe in teaching students the way in which they are most apt to learn, which may include hands on activities, acting, visuals, or the use of music. Teaching should also be relevant and meaningful to students' lives. Similar to adults, children tend to remember what they can relate to. Outside of teaching, I am an avid reader and writer. I often write short stories and poetry. I love traveling and visiting new and interesting locales. I am also an art enthusiast and regularly take drawing and paint classes just for fun.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My philosophy is that all children can learn. It is up to the educator to find effective strategies and resources to reach each child so that they are performing at their full potential.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would help my client feel more comfortable by telling him/or her a little more about myself. I would also assess my client to see where he/she needs the most assistance.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would present the content in an interesting and engaging manner and would show the student how the content is important to his/her life. I would also provide ample praise and encouragement.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would modify the technique or strategy that I was using with that child until I found a way to reach that student.
