What is your teaching philosophy?
You can learn anything! Practice, time, and positive encouragement are the keys to mastering even the most difficult concepts. Positive encouragement is the most crucial since before you can achieve, you must believe in your ability to reach your goals. Revealing the smart and highly capable student within each child and seeing them embrace that part of themselves is the best part of teaching.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Before the first session, I hope to have made contact with the parents and understand the student's tutoring needs from their perspective. Then, during the first session, I gauge the students self-perception and confidence in their aptitude in the subject. Some students' first tutoring need is the self-affirmation needed to tackle large learning goals. Then, I ask the student about their learning goals and semester or year-long trajectory in that subject. I also acquaint myself with any online platforms or programs used by their school or educational programs so that we are on the same page. Lastly, I note all important testing or project dates to be sure they are not overlooked in my future tutoring sessions with the student.
