I have a BS degree from Boston University in Elementary Education, which requires teaching all subjects to Kindergarten through 8th grade. I have taught 7th, 6th, and 5th grades in Massachusetts and in Arizona for a total of 36 years. I tutored students after teaching in public school daily throughout my career. I have also substitute taught for four years in grades K-8. My main focus in tutoring has been in preparation for the AIMS test, which has a focus on Math and Reading. I also enjoy tutoring writing and language to ESL students. My favorite tutoring subjects are those in which the student makes the most progress, and gains confidence.
When tutoring a student, it is most important to develop a strong rapport at the onset of the relationship. Once trust is established, I use positive reinforcement in many forms, to keep the student focused and gratified. My relationship with the adult supervisor is crucial, so that during the ensuing weeks, the student can benefit from their support.
My pleasures include finding new and interesting recipes, developing attractive succulents, reading historical novels, and visiting the ocean. I unwind by playing piano, by doing crossword puzzles, or by traveling to destination with architectural or cultural differences. My most favorite place that I have visited is Italy, to which I hope to return. I have had the pleasure of swimming in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, and in multiple lakes in various countries. After teaching, raising two children, and serving my community, I feel that I am an exemplary teacher, and have served as a role model and mentor to many of my students.
