What is your teaching philosophy?
Each student learns in different ways, so I believe that teachers should cater their teaching styles to the individual's learning style! In this way, the student will get the most out of each lesson.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would try and figure out how the student learns, so that I could teach him or her appropriately. It wouldn't make sense to teach a student who is more hands-on-minded by simply lecturing to them!
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I would give the student homework. I would ask them to answer certain problems, explaining how and why they answered a certain way. Additionally, if I solved a problem for them, I would ask them to "replay" it for me--to pretend that I was the student and they were the tutor, so that they could explain it to me. This would help the student learn that they can be independent workers.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Encouragement is key! I myself had trouble in certain subjects in school; no one is good at everything. I would tell them of my many struggles, and how I went on to graduate college. I would also make sure they understood that they are not "stupid," and that it is okay for them to take time in learning certain concepts. School is not easy!
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would help them learn it in a different way. If a student is not getting the concept when I teach it in the way they normally learn, there are many different teaching styles that I can use to help them understand the concept better.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I would guide them through each question, going back in the reading passages and helping them see where the answer is.
