I recently graduated from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, in 2014. I majored in Biological Chemistry, minored in Mathematics, and concentrated in Public Health. While receiving my Bachelor's of Science, I worked as a tutor and a teaching assistant for various science and math subjects, including calculus, physics, biology, organic chemistry, and general chemistry. Before starting college, I worked as a math tutor for Mathnasium and tutored kindergarten to high school students in different areas of math, from addition to calculus. In addition, I helped the student with their career plans and college-advising.
After graduating, I got a job at Seattle Children's Research Institute conducing cancer research and analyzing tissue samples. Working in the sciences has directed me to become increasingly passionate about microbiology, neuroscience, and biochemistry because learning about these subjects has helped me answer question about how and why organisms, including ourselves, function and act. In my experience, tutoring and teaching a student who is struggling or wants to learn is really fulfilling for me. When tutoring a student, I believe the best way of helping the student learn is teaching them the most basic level of information, then adding more complex information. I enjoy using diagrams and pictures to help teach the student; sometimes science and math can get very complicated, but visual tools makes learning easier! When teaching students, I enjoy connected with them on multiple levels, other than academia, because this makes learning simpler when you're in a comfortable setting.
Outside of school and academics, I love being in the Pacific Northwest and the outdoors. I hike, swim, kayak, run, and bike in my spare time. I'm try to be very active. I also love the sports teams here, especially the Hawks!
