Joshua

I graduated from the University of California at Santa Cruz, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History of Asia and the Islamic World, emphasizing social and intellectual histories. Since graduation, I have striven relentlessly to distill the knowledge I accrued throughout my years as a student. I traveled to Vietnam where, for nearly two years, I instructed Vietnamese students in a myriad of different educational capacities, including assuming the lead English as a Second Language (ESL) teaching position at a local primary school, volunteering to help revivify the core course curriculums for a network of near-failing “at-risk” schools, and managing a tutoring service for children and adults in my neighborhood. As a result, I have been exposed to a diverse range of teaching methodologies and learning preferences, thus allowing me to better assess and engage the particular needs of a student. While I have tutored a vast array of subjects, I am most passionate about teaching English, History, and Politics. Through my experiences, I have found these subjects to be the most suited for instilling the propensity for critical thought that is so fundamental to personal and academic success. To me, education is a catalyst for personal growth and transformation, an inextricable part of living a more nuanced, fulfilling life. As such, it is deeply gratifying when I can encourage and foster this personal growth in my clients as a tutor. When I’m not teaching, I can most likely be found in a café reading, enjoying a brisk hike in the mountains, or watching a soccer match with some friends.
