I am committed to ensuring that every student has access to the best educational opportunities possible. A quality education is the essential first step on the path of life-long success. My job is to help your student find that success in him or herself. Everyone must decide for themselves whether to commit to taking advantage of the educational opportunities available to them. I want to help your student choose to make that commitment.
I received a Bachelor's Degree in Theater with an English Minor from the University of Massachusetts in 2000. I also hold a Letter of Specialization from UMass in Professional Writing and Technical Communication. I spent more than ten years working as a technical writer in various industries, ending up finally at Bank of America. In 2012 I left that career to pursue a Master of Arts degree in Education from Pepperdine University. I completed that degree in 2013. I also hold a preliminary Single Subject (English) teaching credential in California.
Although my ultimate career goal is to obtain a full-time classroom teaching job, in the course of my student work my favorite experiences were working one-on-one with students or with students in small groups. Being in a position to help students achieve a truly in-depth understanding of a subject was very rewarding. In one-on-one instruction, I generally guide the student to an answer by asking questions that help the student connect new material to what they already know. Building these connections helps students understand material better and ultimately retain it more effectively. I particularly enjoy working with students on their writing. The desire to help people learn to effectively express themselves in writing is one of the factors driving my decision to pursue a teaching career and I am able to leverage my own experience and education as a business writer in that pursuit.
Outside of teaching, I am a life-long science-fiction and fantasy fan, have collected comics since my own school days, and enjoy a variety of games, from traditional board games to video games of all descriptions to role playing games like Dungeons and Dragons. I'm also, when time and opportunity permit, an avid outdoors-man, enjoying hiking, camping, canoeing, and other wilderness activities. I also enjoy amateur astronomy, attending public star parties whenever possible.
