I have been tutoring SAT/ACT Verbal, US History, and Literature for almost two years in Los Angeles, but I knew I loved tutoring long before I moved here. While I was earning my degree at Brigham Young University I was a volunteer tutor where I helped fellow students with English, History, ESL, and a myriad of other (verbal) based subjects. It was only after I earned my BS in Business from the Marriott School of Management and moved to Los Angeles that I was able to start tutoring for my job.
I come from a family of educators. All my life I have seen the difference that my mother and father have been able to make in the lives of their students, and though I never aspired to become a full time teacher, my experience working with my students has been more rewarding than I could ever have imagined. I have seen students who could barely comprehend the meaning of simple poems grow to love the work of Shelly, Dickinson, and Whitman. I think it is the change in my students' faces that I like the most. One of my students complained about CR from the first day; several weeks into our work she came in with her face glowing: "You know how you said one day CR would click for me? It did! I get it now!"
I have a passion for the subjects I tutor. While I am the first to admit my math skills are average at best, my passion for reading is unparalleled. More than once I have had a parent thank me for my enthusiasm for Reading, Poetry, Literature, and History. One father even told me he liked to sit nearby because he liked hearing his daughter get excited about reading when I got excited about it. Reading or History should never be boring experiences for a student. I strive to bring life and excitement to the subjects, to not just help my students do well on an exam, but to help them develop their own life-long passion for the subjects.
Most of my friends would describe me as a bit of a geek- I love Dr. Who, Star Trek, and anything on the BBC. In my free time I enjoy painting, acting, photography, and teaching my cat silly tricks like "high-five!"
