I graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in May 2012 with a BA in Psychology. I've lived in the bay area my whole life and have attended both public and private schools in the East Bay. Although I've tutored a range of different subjects, my favorite would be Math and English. I started tutoring in high school where I would help other students for a peers-teaching-peers tutoring program. I also volunteered at an elementary school as a tutor for their after school program. Most students have come to me for Math and essay writing help, but I've also tutored in Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, Grammar and Writing, and History. I believe understanding and creating a good foundation in subjects such as Math and English is key to succeed in school. This is from my own experience as a student who struggled with Algebra and writing English essays. It takes time, work, and practice to build a strong foundation for subjects, but once we do, learning new concepts in each subject area is a lot easier than we thought! I like to break down the subject matter and explain it in a straightforward easy manner while working with a lot of examples to make sure the student understands the concept we're going over. When I'm not at school or volunteering, I am usually at home playing computer games, working on a DIY project, playing my ukulele, reading, or napping with my puppy (sleep is important for both of us!). When I venture out of my cave, I hang out with friends around the Bay Area where we go out and try a restaurant, attend concerts, bike, or hit the skatepark.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

Building a strong foundation is key! In order to do this, we need to approach the topic with examples and plenty of practice. It takes time, but it is well worth it. Developing good study habits is also another important trait I want to help foster in my students. It's important to set goals and figure out the best method to complete them. I believe this is an important life skill to have in order to succeed as a student and whatever career path they may choose in the future.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Typically, I will ask them what they think their weak points are and how they would like me to help them. Then, I would like to see their recent quizzes, exams, and homework in order to gauge where they stand with the subject material. I usually have the student decide on what they want to go over and choose to focus on for the rest of the session.
