While at Yale, I taught part time at two different charter schools (Amistad Academy and Cooperative Arts and Humanities Magnet). I love working with kids, and have studied positive reinforcement techniques to enhance learning. I tend to tackle learning from a top-down, conceptual angle - I found in school that I could learn information by rote and do fine on a test, but could achieve much more through a more macroscopic conceptual understanding of the topic at hand. As a teacher of middle school chorus, I made it my goal to focus on that sort of macroscopic perspective on music, teaching kids who had no prior music experience to read music and understand music, rather than just sing it by rote. The result was a chorus of engaged, knowledgable singers equipped with the tools for a future as a music lover and maker. I have experience in both Math/Science and the Humanities. At Yale, I studied Philosophy of Science, focusing on the intersection of physics and philosophy (my senior essay explored the knowability of the direction of time, and incorporated findings from wave-physics), and took numerous courses in literature and writing. But perhaps most of all, what makes me a great tutor is my sheer love of teaching. There are few joys greater than guiding someone to a richer understanding, and paving the way for improvement.
