VARSITY TUTORS CERTIFIED TUTOR BASED IN NEW YORK CITY
MY PERSONAL STATEMENT
Teaching is an ability which has always come naturally to me, and in which I take great pride.
While attending college I worked part-time each year teaching an AP Economics course which I designed at the prestigious Wheeler School in Providence, RI. In addition to teaching economics at the high school I also taught various other elective courses to elementary and middle school students at Wheeler. I also have experience as a volunteer SAT tutor for underprivileged students with "Let's Get Ready!" in Mt. Vernon, NY.
From these two disparate experiences I learned that teaching the most inquisitive pupil and teaching the most reluctant student can be equally challenging and rewarding. I take great joy in helping my students, and I believe that understanding and a positive rapport are the keys to a successful teaching relationship. I get to know my students both in terms of their level of academic ability and motivation as well as what styles of education serve them best. However, I believe it equally important to understand what interests and excites a student outside of the classroom.
I am an extremely versatile tutor, able to help students in all facets of the humanities (english/literature, history, philosophy, etc.) as well as with courses in business, economics and government. I take particular pride in helping students learn to best form, present and defend their ideas through written argument and analysis.
I grew up in Scarsdale, NY - I was a national championship debater and worked hard to get into an Ivy League university. I fully understand the pressure on students (and parents!) to excel academically in high school, get into the best college, and get the most out of that college. I not only help my clients to realize these goals, but I also help them to keep perspective and to achieve what they want in the healthiest and most effective ways possible.
