VARSITY TUTORS CERTIFIED TUTOR BASED IN LOS ANGELES
MY PERSONAL STATEMENT
I am currently attending Cal Poly Pomona, and I am majoring in Mechanical Engineering. I tutor a variety of subjects in mathematics, physics, and mechanical engineering. In mathematics I tutor everything from pre-algebra up to calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations. I have to say that differential equations is my favorite math subject because of its applications to physics. My physics subjects include classical mechanics, electricity and magnetism, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and modern physics (relativity and quantum mechanics).
I have tutored since 2009 when I became a mathematics tutor at Santiago Canyon College. After transferring to Cal Poly Pomona, I became a tutor in the Math and Science Help program at my university for 2 years. I have worked mostly with college students, but I do have experience helping high school students as well. My approach to tutoring is to understand the difficulties my students have and then work on those problems to build a solid understanding of the subject being studied. I rely on pictures and a white board when I tutor (especially with physics), and I also believe in getting a student engaged by having him/her solve problems on their own after having explained the concepts. I tend to use real world applications of physics concepts because I believe students can relate to these examples more easily. The most rewarding part of being a tutor is when the student understands a subject or when he/she will tell me about the A they scored on their exam. Math and Physics is challenging, but I believe one can understand these topics by practicing problems and understanding fundamental concepts.
