MY PERSONAL STATEMENT
I have been teaching trombone lessons for seven years, since I graduated with a BA in music education from the University of North Texas. I am currently in graduate school working on a performance degree, but my first love is teaching and I hope to have a college teaching job someday.
While in school, I've also the opportunity to work with colleagues and co-workers with non-musical pursuits. This has been especially true in grad school, where I've been one of the "old guys" for the first time in my life. In this role, I've helped several people with ACT and GRE test prep, as well as essay and paper writing.
My teaching strategy is focus on the student's approach to learning. I try to help them develop a process, rather than just focusing on answers. If the student can fix the root of their problem, they don't come back with the same problem week after week. To use music as an example, something I do frequently, rather than just telling a student about a concept, I work with them until they can hear the same thing I'm hearing. Then they can work on it even if I'm not in the room.
I believe that all students are capable of learning and being successful. It takes patience, hard work, a willingness to take criticism, and mental toughness. And it sometimes the teacher needs as much of it as the student! I like to aim high for the long term and use smaller, achievable goals along the way. The journey can be frustrating, but nothing beats the satisfaction of a job well done.
