I am currently a student at Cal State University Long Beach, majoring in Civil Engineering. I transferred to CSULB from UC Berkeley where I spent a semester as a Mathematics major but soon realized that I would much rather pursue a degree in a field of applied mathematics. Prior to transferring to UC Berkeley, however, I completed an AS degree in Mathematics and an AA in Political Science at MiraCosta Community College.

While still a student at MiraCosta College, I was not your average Math major. I started from the very bottom, taking Pre-Algebra and quickly working my way up to Differential Equations, Calculus III and Discrete Mathematics. I was first noticed for my hard work by one of my mathematics professors who then recommended me to MiraCosta’s Math Learning Center for a tutoring position, which I attained and worked at for a year before transferring to UC Berkeley. I was placed on the President’s List four semesters in a row, and in my last semester at MiraCosta College I was awarded with a scholarship by the Mathematics Department for my outstanding academic achievement, for which I was thrilled to be even considered.

As a tutor at MiraCosta College, I had the opportunity to work with students of various ages and educational backgrounds, including students with special needs, who taught me the most about this job and people in general. I understand how sensitive and sometimes insecure some students may be about their math skills, and having experienced that myself, I’ve learned to be extra sensitive and patient about students needs.
My method of tutoring is quite simple. I aim to break down complex concepts by chipping away at them until the student secures a strong grasp on the material. I then proceed to challenge the student with examples that assure both of us that he/she understands the concepts.
