MY PERSONAL STATEMENT
Below I've included my philosophy of education from my teaching portfolio. This is my approach to tutoring as well: to be prepared and knowledgable on my end regarding the topic, and to revise the approach as necessary depending on the student's response.

My Philosophy of Education:

No matter how intelligent, talented, or creative one is, a teacher must have two foundational qualities to be effective: s/he must respect and must love working with students. If a teacher neither respects the learner nor enjoys the interaction, then there exists no incentive to work hard, to be dedicated. And teaching is hard work. It is dedication.

My role as English teacher is vital in my students' lives, for reading and communication are vital in life. Extracting information from reading is essential for all people, as is being able to successfully communicate with one's society, no matter what job one has. I believe that all students are capable of being functional, competent communicators. My goal is to find the exercises, activities, and explanations that make the how-to of reading and communication comprehensible

That is my main role as a teacher: to help my students develop the necessary skills that they might succeed after they leave my classroom. To achieve that end, I believe it essential to be well prepared and know what goals I want my students to achieve, as well as the means to get them there. However, I must also evaluate those means as the year progresses and be open to changing them to best meet the needs of the students.

The environment in which one teaches and learns is important. I strive to make my classroom physically, psychologically, and emotionally safe, as well as engaging. But a teacher must also be visible outside the classroom. The relationship between student and teacher is a huge part of education, especially secondary: with so many changes and transitions defining students' lives during this time, it is necessary that they are able to interact with adults as coaches, directors, mentors, and community members. These relationships provide influential opportunities to connect with students; such connections offer opportunities for better learning environments. Such chances are not always easy to come by, but they do exist and are important. Allowing them to happen—both outside the classroom and in it—requires hard work, dedication, planning, and care. The quality of education is not just what is being taught, but how one is taught: that is entirely dependent upon the teacher.
