VARSITY TUTORS CERTIFIED TUTOR BASED IN NEW YORK CITY
MY PERSONAL STATEMENT
I was a professor at a university in Manhattan, teaching organic chemistry at the undergraduate level. I obtained my PhD from Columbia University and have a BS from MIT in chemistry. I am most qualified to teach general and organic chemistry, from the high school level to graduate level.
I have extensive experience teaching general chemistry and organic chemistry at the undergraduate level, in addition to graduate level organic and organometallic chemistry. In addition to classroom teaching experience, I have also had the opportunity to tutor students at all life-stages in general and organic chemistry. Among my most rewarding experiences through teaching have been seeing a once-struggling student have his or her breakthrough moment in chemistry, whether it's something as simple as balancing a redox equation or as challenging as learning the correct mechanism for carbonyl addition reactions.
I'm a big believer in being able to learn through not being afraid to make mistakes--the bigger and louder, the better. This of course requires having an approachable, patient and encouraging mentor who can help you work through and clear up any misunderstandings from the beginning, before they become lower grades on exams or problem sets. Additionally, rather than teaching through lecturing, I strongly feel that working through challenging exercises and having the discussions that result from working through practice problems are some of the best techniques for mastering science subjects, particularly chemistry.
When not teaching or performing synthetic chemistry research, I enjoy running, hiking, biking, baking and exploring new restaurants. I also enjoy seeing live music (Radiohead is my favorite, but most any acoustic-guitar-type music will do) and exploring Brooklyn.
