VARSITY TUTORS CERTIFIED TUTOR BASED IN ST. LOUIS
MY PERSONAL STATEMENT
I've worked with children of all ages, from elementary school to high school through jobs and volunteering. I'm very responsible and always try to connect with my students. I like to teach by asking questions so that the process is more interactive and students understand the material better.
I currently work as a general chemistry laboratory mentor. My duties include office hours where students who just finished lab come to complete their lab reports and ask questions. I take my tutoring/mentoring job very seriously. Because there is a new lab every week, I attend the lab lecture that students attend, read through the lab, finish the pre-lab, lab report and additional exercises ahead of time, check the answers, and go to weekly mentor meetings to discuss potential questions students may have. Thus, I put in a lot of time outside office hours to make sure that I understand the material completely so that I can explain it in the clearest way possible. In addition to being a chemistry lab mentor, I have volunteered at Lydia's House, an abused women and children shelter for the past two years as a tutor for elementary to high school kids. I would help them with homework, test preparation, read with them or play games with them. Through this experience, I've learned how to interact with and teach kids from a variety of backgrounds.
