During my two years with Teach For America and almost three years with Chicago Public Schools, I taught Mandarin, 5th grade, and small group reading instruction to students from diverse backgrounds and educational levels. Through these experiences, I have learned the value and necessity of tailoring instruction to students' individual needs. I enjoyed the one-on-one and small group instruction, because it allowed me to support each individual student better. These skills and knowledge, I believe, will help me tutor students of all ages and in all subject areas.

For students in reading, math, and science, I believe one of the best ways to help students succeed is techniques not commonly used in the classroom. I have found that allowing students to come to their own answers, guiding them to solve problems, and helping them towards self-directed learning are some of the best ways to make students invested in their own learning and motivated to succeed.

As one of the fastest growing language programs in Chicago and the U.S., Mandarin Chinese is becoming more and more relevant in colleges and jobs. I am a native speaker but also took classes and spent a summer in Beijing in a language immersion program. In my two and a half years teaching Mandarin to non-native speakers, I have gained the skills and knowledge to teach language in many different ways to many different types of learners.

I hope to help students not only succeed in attending the college of their choice but also develop life-long learning skills.
