MY PERSONAL STATEMENT
In 2010, I received a Ph.D. in English from the University of California, Davis, where I also taught literature and writing courses. I now teach for the English Department at Webster University. I am an active, attentive, and resourceful educator, and I love working with students individually. I coach my students to be active and critical readers, and deliberate and thoughtful writers. When they evaluate my teaching, my students often note how I support them as writers. One writes that “[Clara is] really good at correcting papers and office hours and loves to help and notices when you take her advice.” Another writes, “She inspired me to do well in English.” Because many of my students are college freshmen, I am uniquely qualified to work with students preparing for college and navigating that critical first year. But I am also well-versed in the requirements of more advanced college reading and writing, not only in English but across the disciplines. Finally, I love the ins and outs of grammar, and I enjoy working with developing writers and students preparing for the SAT and ACT.

My interests include modern and contemporary poetry, philosophy, ecology, the history of recorded music, roadside America, and the St. Louis Cardinals. I also edit the St. Louis-based journal Temporary Art Review (temporaryartreview.com).
