I have been a professor in the Biological Sciences at DePaul University in Lincoln Park for 9 years and have taught at the university level for 23 years. I have donated many hours teaching at grade and high schools on various subjects in the U.S. and abroad, many times in several languages. My primary objective is to get students from a basic understanding of the material to a level where they can independently think and apply the material in practical situations or to problem solve. This is one of the greatest goals and benefits of the educational experience. I strive to help student make connections between concepts and realize that concepts are interwoven and build off of each other and I am not afraid to challenge students.

My objective is to build a rapport with students. I gain their confidence and trust by letting them know that I am human also. I ride my mountain bike, I play guitar, I have taken the courses that they are taking, and I passed, which is good evidence that they can pass them too. I am now successful in the field, hence, I can be a very good resource for them and can provide tools that can help them on their educational journey. When students are comfortable with you and trust you, they are more stimulated, engaged, are willing to ask more questions and actively participate in the course.

I use a combination of approaches when I teach, such as, animated power point presentations or writing on the board but I always lean towards hands on projects or activities when I can. Students are always more responsive and receptive to material when they can interactively work though a problem or activity and I am playing an advisor role. Because I am very passionate about the subject matter, my presentations are energized. I fill my lessons with personal examples from my vast research experiences in various countries around the world. Students find the examples, hence, the material, much more intriguing when they know their instructor has actually ?been there and done that?.

I love to interact with students and see them succeed in their classes. I take my responsibilities as a teacher seriously. My success as a teacher comes from building healthy, open relationships with my students, maintaining a positive attitude, and developing engaging ways to present material to keep the material fresh and energized.
