MY PERSONAL STATEMENT
I have missed teaching ever since I gave up being a professor at Santa Clara University to move to San Diego for a job in the defense industry. My Dad was a High School teacher and my Mom was a Middle School teacher, so I grew up with a love of teaching and a desire to teach others. I tutored friends and classmates since middle school, at their request and at the request of my teachers. One example is from when I was a high school junior and I tutored someone who was failing physics who ended up doing so well that she became a physics teacher at my high school, where she taught a student 16 years ago who eventually became my wife! I have always loved math, taking extra math classes while an undergrad and grad student, and have always loved teaching math. I have tutored students as young as elementary school (I am an instructor at the Math Club for my daughters’ school, where my daughters are by far the top math students in their grade levels), through highly complex probability and linear algebra problems that PhD students brought to me. The way that I tutor students for subjects like Math is is to teach them how to break the problem down to find the simplest way to solve the problems—memorization and repetition may get a student past a homework assignment or a quiz, but they need to truly understand how to be a problem solver to be able to apply the concepts as they move on to more advanced subjects. I wish to tutor students in my spare time because I miss working with students and because I find Math and Physics so much fun. Teaching my daughters has been a lot of fun (my oldest daughter is 8 and she’s already gotten me to teach her Probability and she is asking for more advanced topics), but I’d like to work with older students too. My family loves all of the activities that San Diego has, the sole reason why I’ve repeatedly turned down huge monetary offers from high-tech companies in the Bay Area and LA ever since the startup I was a part of in San Diego was bought.
