VARSITY TUTORS CERTIFIED TUTOR BASED IN CHICAGO
MY PERSONAL STATEMENT
I earned my undergraduate degree in Biology from Messiah College in Grantham, PA, graduating in 2010 Magna Cum Laude. I recently finished coursework for a Master's degree Bioethics from Trinity International University in Deerfield, IL.
I first developed a passion for mentoring others as an upperclassman on the Messiah lacrosse team. I made sure I was always available to talk to younger players about issues both on and off the field. Over the course of my Junior and Senior years at Messiah I developed several great friendships and had countless conversations through which I helped younger players with the trials encountered by college student-athletes.
Additionally, I have experience in a supervisory role at a mosquito control company training new employees and assisting veteran employees to improve their productivity. This experience helped me recognize that different people learn in different ways, and it is often necessary to frame content in several ways to ensure that the concept is being communicated.
I have also been a volunteer tutor/mentor with an organization called Cabrini Connections since September. I work with a young student from Chicago one night a week with whatever homework he might have. Through this, I am learning to connect with those who have a different background from myself.
In my past teaching/training experiences I have found that mutual respect is extremely important. I believe in giving my students (or employees) the respect they deserve. A part of respecting my students is recognizing, especially in a tutoring environment, that I am there to facilitate the learning process. As such, I try to guide the student as he or she learns the material, only actively teaching when necessary.
