VARSITY TUTORS CERTIFIED TUTOR BASED IN SAN DIEGO
MY PERSONAL STATEMENT
I currently attend the University of California, San Diego studying both music composition and philosophy with honors in music. My primary focus here is contemporary music composition but I am also well-versed in music theory from counterpoint through the 20th century (the fun stuff!), Western music history, experimental performance, and different tuning systems. Additionally, I am an experienced guitarist, having played in various jazz combos throughout San Diego and am available to tutor guitar in any style. My students' lessons are tailored to their own skill level and particular interests with emphasis on reading, interpretation, improvisation (in jazz, mostly) and technical skills. I can also tutor all basic musicianship and keyboard skills. Music is an enjoyable activity and every effort is made to avoid it becoming a chore with my students; after all, keeping it interesting was ultimately what made me keep doing it! As far as philosophy goes, I am able to tutor any high school philosophy class, symbolic logic up to the collegiate level, religion, and my favorite, aesthetics.
As a tutor, I taught and tutored high school math classes at the Charter School of San Diego for over two years. This gave invaluable experience and insight into the act of teaching and it was here that I first became aware of a strong passion I have for spreading knowledge. Through this experience, I was able to develop strong teaching abilities through 'proper' communication and patience. Different students learn different ways—this is obvious—and it is through understanding the particular way in which a student learns that learning is accomplished (often times, the learning is reciprocal!). The most satisfying feeling is working with a student when they initially struggle and then to see them succeed and finally understand. At the Charter School I also regularly held writing and music workshops in which students could receive feedback on their writing or could get their feet wet with basic music skills such as singing and rhythm.
Outside of my academic work, I really don't have a life. Just kidding, but seriously... I enjoy spending time outside on my bike, reading, drinking lots of coffee, and camping.
