MY PERSONAL STATEMENT
Before turning to writing full time, I spent ten years at sea on small boats, working as a professional yacht captain and yacht delivery skipper. I've sailed across the Atlantic four times, once alone in a 27-foot-long engineless wooden sailboat, and once on a 200 foot-long tall ship that was recreating the voyage of the Beagle. For the latter voyage (2009) I was invited by Dutch public television because I had written a biography of the Beagle's captain, one of Charles Darwin's most important mentors, Robert FitzRoy.
