From the time I was a child and playing school with my younger sister and neighbors, teaching seems to have been a part of me. I come from a family of many proud educators with career experiences ranging from elementary teachers to college professors, so when it came time to choose a career path and major during college I decided to follow in my family’s footsteps and enter a field that let me combine two of my passions—English and working with young people.
I graduated summa cum laude from Baylor University in 2001. My tutoring experience began during my freshman year at Baylor, and I have been teaching middle school language arts for the past ten years. Through my professional and volunteer work, I have tutored students from third grade up through high school, and I also teach pre-school Sunday school at my church. My areas of specialty are reading, writing/composition, grammar, vocabulary, study/organizational skills, and TAKS/STAAR test preparation.
I believe in making tutoring relevant and engaging for my students, and I employ educational strategies that appeal to students’ varied learning styles. Whether analyzing poetic devices in song lyrics, building reading comprehension and fluency by sharing a favorite book, or organizing an essay by making a foldable, I like to make learning interesting for my students. My goal as an educator is to motivate my students and help them develop confidence as they achieve educational success.
When I’m not working with students, I enjoy reading, spending time with my family, and playing with my pets. I grew up in the Dallas area, and today enjoy exploring the city’s history while also discovering Dallas’s newest offerings. When at home, I enjoy watching the Cooking Channel and love finding new recipes to try out for my family and friends.
