VARSITY TUTORS CERTIFIED TUTOR BASED IN ATLANTA
MY PERSONAL STATEMENT
I am a Women's Studies Master's student at Georgia State University, and I graduated from Augusta State University as Valedictorian with a 4.0 GPA. I am excited to be working with Varsity Tutors to provide students in the Atlanta area the academic help they deserve!
My areas of tutoring expertise are writing, reading, literature and SAT preparation. I have tutored writing for several years now, and I thoroughly enjoy helping others learn how to read and write better.
I especially like to tutor students in college admissions and scholarship essay writing. As an undergraduate, I was the recipient of 12 scholarships, including the National Beta Club Scholarship and the prestigious Presidential Scholarship at the Georgia Institute of Technology. I have helped a number of students procure scholarship funds, and I take great pride in helping others to achieve their dreams of pursuing college degrees!
I also tutor basic and lower-level mathematics. As a child, I struggled with reading because of a minor, undiagnosed form of dyslexia. Because of this, I was instantly drawn to mathematics, where I did not have as much difficulty reading numbers. Even though I went on to pursue a degree in English Literature, I absolutely love mathematics and enjoy tutoring others in mathematics!
I believe that tutoring should be Socratic, meaning that I rarely "give" answers to students but help them approach the answers by asking them questions. Like Socrates, I aim to be the perpetual "gadfly" to my students' intellects. My ultimate goal is that my students will become intellectually and academically independent learners, and by deploying the Socratic method, I aim to help students gain the confidence to move forward with their academic selves.
At the same time, though, I recognize that many students approach tutoring from places of psychological distress, confusion, and shame; thus, I believe that part of tutoring includes helping students build self-confidence and pride in their academic lives. As someone who struggled in my early academic years, I understand how trying it can be for people to come to tutoring, and I always try to provide empathetic tutoring sessions to students.
I look forward to working with you or your child!
