MY PERSONAL STATEMENT
I am currently working on a Ph.D. in Sociology with a focus on Education. When I graduate I plan to research and teach at the college level. I would hazard a guess that this illustrates at least part of my love of education and school. Because of this belief I have been tutoring students since I began my undergraduate studies at Ohio State University, and I continued to do so while getting my Masters degree at the London School of Economics. In both of these cases I tutored specific subjects, but it was also with an aim of improving test scores. Additionally, I have also helped others prepare for standardized tests.

During the course of my many, many years as a student I have had many brilliant instructors, but not all of them have been great teachers. Quite simply there are some instructors that I've wanted to be able to somehow download the knowledge they have into my brain because I knew they had it, but unfortunately they did not know how to share it. Others, however, not only know how to teach the given materials, but they also know how to teach their students how to think and reason. I believe that makes all the difference in the world, and I like to think that I have that same ability. It is important because it allows one to better grasp the material at hand but, more importantly, it provides a framework for understanding future material. There are so many different ways to teach and understand math, standardized tests (because standardized tests measure one's proficiency at taking standardized tests as much as they measure one's aptitude in a given subject area), grammar, and so on that it really is critical that the material is taught in such a way that students have their own understanding of the materials rather than having a momentary ability to repeat facts that they have been told. Part of the certain knack I have in teaching is not only figuring out a way to teach the material that makes it more easily understood, but I try to make the material less esoteric and more interesting and practical.

While education takes up the vast majority of my life currently, I love music and going to concerts. At both OSU and LSE when I wasn't studying for myself or tutoring others I DJed at my schools' respective radio stations and wrote reviews. In my mind, there are few boundaries between the recreational and academic, and I think both can help others absorb new material.
