A community enthusiast and advocate to the very core, I have recently graduated with my

Master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University at Albany – SUNY with an

emphasis in Community Development. Prior to earning this degree, I worked for many years as

a Workforce Development Specialist, Trainer and Group Facilitator for individuals with

disAbilities of all ages, with stints at organizations such as United Cerebral Palsy, The Delta

Gamma Center for Children with Visual Impairment, Northeastern Association of the Blind at

Albany and the Statler Center for Careers in Hospitality. Teaching has always been a passion

throughout all of these endeavors, having graduated from Southern Illinois University

Carbondale with my Bachelor's in Special Education degree in 2009. Through student teaching,

tutoring in college for AmeriCorps, and my professional experiences, I have experience teaching

students with special needs in classrooms K-12 (all subjects), tutoring all levels of Math and

Reading, preparing individuals for the GED, and teaching the hard and soft skills of job

readiness. Higher level subjects in the social sciences such as Psychology and Economics have

always been a strength and I am more than happy to share my passion there, too! As an

educator, I am highly creative with how I go about sharing my knowledge and as a high

achieving student myself, I have tricks up my sleeve for how to tackle even the meanest of

subjects and exams. I look forward to helping you reach your educational goals.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

With a background in special education, my teaching philosophy is to adopt a teaching style that works best for my student and takes into account their learning preferences and interests. I do my best to make lessons fun and engaging when possible, and often have students teach material back to me to demonstrate learning and understanding.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Assuming they are going to be long-term, I first like to spend time getting to know my student so that we can begin building a relationship based on trust and mutual respect. I will have my student explain where they currently are in the subject they are learning and where they would like to be (goal-setting), I will lay down my expectations for our session, and finally, we will go over a sample of random problems from previous work so that I can identify where they are struggling. A short conversation with participating guardians before or after the session is encouraged to open lines of communication.
