We covered solving and graphing functions with asymptotes, specifically linear, quadratic, and finally cubic expression ratios. The student expressed the sentiment that this was the hardest math had been yet, but was able to solve them once we talked about strategies for finding various parts of the answers. It seemed less like he had trouble with the math and more that the math was not interesting to him. We were able to cover all of the material and discussed strategies for that style of problem.

Tutoring review by ManHua in Taneytown, MD
Today, we reviewed Unit 3 material and focused on answering the questions the student had on the review sheet. We went over the first word problem together, and I explained to her how to interpret the problem and how to draw simple sketch graphs to help her understand the problem. She completed the rest of the word problems on the review sheet on her own. She is capable of completing the word problems now. I've asked her to complete the review sheet for the polynomials unit before next time.

Tutoring review by Eunki in Taneytown, MD
The student and I delved deeper into factoring concepts and covered most of the chapter. While he did have some trouble initially keeping track of the details of the formulas and theories, he didn't have any issues understanding the overall concepts. He only needed to be aware of the minor mistakes that tend to trip up people when they first learn how to factor by recognizing unique patterns that help simplify factoring. I don't anticipate this will be a huge hurdle, but it will be immensely rewarding in future math classes as factoring does pop up frequently in the future. It certainly will be tested in the college placement exams, but given how quickly he took to solving some of the sample problems, I feel comfortable that he'll be able to get through the practice problems without struggling too much. I also briefly explained that the rest of what we cover will also continue to be high-yield as these advanced concepts will continue to be seen in advanced math courses as well as the placement exam.

The student did very well on his ACT homework, scoring a 26 composite with high scores in English, Math, and Science. We did one final ACT drill together; here he got a 27 composite, with high scores in English and Science and a perfect pass on Reading. Afterwards, I addressed a few questions he had about his math homework before we wrapped up.
