Tutoring review by Christian in Malverne, NY
Today the student and I began by reviewing the disc and washer method for calculating the volume of a solid. First I explained where the formula came from and what was actually happening when it is integrated. We worked on a few practice problems, and he understood them very well. We then moved on to the cylindrical shell method, which he had not done in class yet. After explaining it to him, I asked him to solve a problem, which he did without flaw. He is very bright and picks up concepts quickly. We did a few more practice problems, and he made a few minor errors. After discussing them, I believe they were due to simple oversight and not a lack of understanding. We did the same for the cross section formula. Finally we did a short review on substitution, integration by parts, and trigonometric substitution. I suggested that he begin memorizing more trigonometric substitutions. Otherwise, he is doing well.

He had done some homework over solving a system of linear equations using the substitution method. At first, he struggled with the process. I made an effort to slow him down and talk him through a couple problems. By doing this, he was able separate the steps he needed to follow and was able to use the substitution method correctly. Also, he did a much better job tonight of showing his work and keeping it organized. I believe it really helped him to learn quickly through the homework tonight.

Tutoring review by Nazish in Malverne, NY
In our last session we only completed half of the review packet that the student received from school, so we spent this session completing the rest. We practiced slowly reading the questions and trying not to miss things in the questions. I also tried to get her to remember to keep showing her work in all of the questions regardless of how hard or easy the question is.

We went over various problems from a packet of problems given to the student by his teacher. The problems covered various topics including rates of change, concavity, chain rule, limits at infinity, continuity, L'Hopital's rule, and the fundamental theorem of Calculus. The student was very confident in his approach to the subject and shows much improvement.

Tuesday we reviewed for an upcoming statistics test using a teacher review sheet, which covered standard deviation, box-and-whisker plots, different types of data displays, marginal and joint frequencies, and interquartile range. The student seemed fairly confident about understanding the material and was able to work out the problems with little assistance. After the session, I emailed her additional problems to practice before the test. Before the end of the school year, she will have to take the semester final and the course exam, so we will begin reviewing for this after the statistics test.

Tutoring review by Rachel in Malverne, NY
The student has a formative assessment in a few days, so we spent the session reviewing the material for it. She had a few questions regarding the r-value and correlation coefficient that we talked about, and we worked through a worksheet on that material as well. I had her practice a few more problems on box and whisker plots, histograms, and frequency tables in addition so that we could go over any questions that came up when she was working on those. She is doing a great job in this unit and is developing an ability to figure out how to find the answers to her own questions as opposed to feeling defeated about not knowing the material.
