One of the student's first assignments was to complete a writer's inventory. This allowed me, as well as his teacher, to learn a lot about him as a writer. We discussed different possible formats such as answering in complete sentences or sentence fragments. He is very bright and has an excellent vocabulary. He does tend to rush and jump around. We talked about how he can slow down and read what he's written out loud to get a sense if something sounds right or wrong. We also discussed how distractions disrupt focus and make it harder to remember what the writer wants to express. We reviewed parts of speech. I encouraged him to take some risks and ask his teacher for clarification on writing expectations. His preoccupation with doing it right makes writing more difficult and less desirable. He expressed that he wants to improve his spelling. We talked about different strategies for checking our work. Great job!

Tutoring review by Jaxon in Havre de Grace, MD
This was our last session before the student's next test. She says she feels much better going into this test than the last test. Today we talked about acid/base dissociation constants, and did a lot of practice converting from pH/pOH to Ka and Kb values. We went over her previous homework assignments and reviewed the problems she missed. She generally has more trouble with the conceptual questions than the math questions, and this test is going to be more math than conceptual, so I think she will do much better than her last exam.
