In this lesson, we covered exponents and logarithms in many forms. First, we algebraically manipulated exponential expressions using the properties. We reviewed negative exponents and fractions in the exponent as well. Then we moved on to logarithm and went over what exactly a logarithm means and how it relates as the inverse of an exponential. We solved equations for x where x was in an exponent, so we had to take a logarithm to isolate x. We progressed to their respective derivatives, relating the general form a^x to e^x and log(x) to ln(x). We practiced taking derivatives using these new formulas, and in the process reviewed chain rule.

We reviewed the student's previous test to see which problems were incorrect and why. We worked through problems from my book involving translating English to math, and he did well with that. We further reviewed fractions and solving equations involving fractions. Finally, we looked at the student's encroaching homework to check for understanding and completeness. The homework introduced him to graphing, which he understood well.

Tutoring review by Jennifer in York charter Township, MI
We covered sections 9.1, 9.4, 9.5 of the algebra book. The student needed some reminding on inverse/direct relations, but quickly picked it up. He did not have trouble simplifying polynomial fractions and was easily able to factor more complicated expressions. He also was able to perform complex fraction simplification with little tutoring, which was pretty awesome. In chemistry, we covered solutions, dilutions, molarity, molality, and colligative properties. I used familiar examples, such as salt water, gas dissolved in soda, and salting icy roads to explain these concepts, which he seemed to understand readily and was able to perform some small calculations without issue. I stressed the importance of dimensional analysis rather than memorization and recommended he perform dilution problems from the book for extra practice.

Today's session with the student went really well. We focused on calculus and worked through various topics. He isn't struggling at all and is doing quite well on the subject. I left him my book so that he can complete extra problems during the week when he has time.

Tutoring review by Samantha in York charter Township, MI
Today we focused mostly on chemistry. We did problems involving solutions and the differences between v/v and w/v. The student did most of the problems by herself, and I checked her work. I think she became more confident in solving problems today. She has her next geometry test soon, so we will prepare her for it during our next session.
