Tutoring review by Greg in Voorheesville, NY
The student had one new worksheet since our last session on Tuesday. We went through it together, but he had correctly answered almost all of the questions. The only mistakes he made were from answering questions too quickly, and I cautioned him to take his time. Their class is still working on exponents, which we talked through pretty thoroughly on Tuesday. He has a quiz tomorrow covering exponents, so I had prepared some practice questions. The questions covered: writing expressions in exponent and standard form, calculating values of exponents, identifying the base and exponent values, writing an expression for a geometric series, and solving a word problem involving exponents (interest on money). He did very well with each concept, and I am confident he will do well on his quiz tomorrow. With our remaining time, I introduced the student to scientific notation. This built upon his knowledge of exponents, so he picked it up fairly quickly. We are meeting again on Tuesday and Thursday next week.

We spent the session reviewing linear equations. First, we started with word problems using graphic representations. Then, we looked at a short practice worksheet the student was given by her professor. We reviewed how to determine whether a point is on a given line by substituting the X and Y values into the equation. Finally, we spent the remaining time working on finding the unit rate and/or slope of the line. We reviewed the formula for finding the slope using two given points, and then practiced it using point, graph, and word problem examples. The student will have another test next Wednesday, and we will meet on Tuesday to continue preparing for it.

Today, we reviewed the critical reading sections that were previously assigned. The student has made noticeable improvements in her critical reading analysis skills. The bulk of today's session was dedicated to writing: locating/ isolating grammatical mistakes in sentences. We reviewed several of the most common mistakes found in the SAT. We worked together on some examples and the student also worked independently on a few sections. Next week will be our last session and will be devoted to writing the 25 minute essay. Time permitting, we will also do a complete SAT review.

Today we solved for both x and y in quadratics by graphing. This involved a small learning curve because of the nature of using graphing calculators, but the student was very consistent with finding the x values by the end. We also reviewed factoring, but again, she seems to be very consistent with that as well.

We mostly went over the student's grades and found out what he has missing and what he needs to turn in/study for this week. I also had him build a list of things to ask his teachers about certain assignments that were not inputted into the online garbed. We then started going over his geometry, as he has a test this week. I am planning to bring more practice problems to our next session.

We reviewed material for a precalculus take-home exam--polar form of complex numbers, DeMoivre's theorem, finding nth roots of complex numbers, word problems involving the binomial theorem, graphing trigonometric functions, and creating trigonometric models from word problems. I recommended that the student focus on the trigonometry problems and to practice the steps in converting complex numbers to polar form; she was comfortable with the binomial theorem.
