Recent Patchogue Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Eric in Patchogue, NY
The student was ready right away with the problem I left her with in our last session. She had the first step done perfectly, but had not figured out where to go from there. This was an involved but worthwhile problem, so we spent most of the session working on it. While it started as a basic application of the Pythagorean theorem, it quickly became about recognizing when triangles are similar and using proportions to find missing sides. We spent a lot of time looking at the angles to establish that each triangle had a right angle and the two smaller triangles shared an angle with the biggest triangle. She could see this readily, but it took more time to get her to find out that this meant, due to the properties of triangles, that the third remaining angle was also the same, proving the three triangles to be similar. Once this was firmly established, to a point that should transfer beyond the context of this problem or similar problems, it was time to use that similar relationship to create proportions between corresponding parts of the triangle. With corresponding sides touching, it was easy for her to see the relative scale of the triangles and we were still able to prove their similarity by bringing back the "parallel lines cut by a transversal" from our last session. The last thing we did with this problem was look at the area of the three triangles to see how we could apply the ratio of side lengths to the ratio of the area of the two triangles. Showing that the side lengths factor into area twice, it was clear that as side lengths get longer by a factor r, area increases by r^2. Before leaving, I checked in with her about her math studies, and she seemed to be doing well with that content and it was material I'd seen her do before so I was not concerned about whether or not she could handle it. Instead, I took a guess at what would be coming up next and brought up the important points about inequalities and how they're basically done like equations with a few minor but important differences. She did well with this and I am confident she will continue to do well with her math studies. To keep her working on what we did this session, I asked her to find the side lengths of the triangle we did not use, by way of a proportion and we will look at it at our next session.

Tutoring review by Valerie in Patchogue, NY
The student showed me some of her work she did at school. She did a great job. We reviewed subtraction with regrouping. I gave her some problems that were very challenging (i.e., regrouping over zeros, and four digit regrouping). I assured her that it was ok to be challenged, and I told her these were problems that would stretch her mind. We took it one step at a time, and by the third problem she was using her rules and was able to successfully complete the problems. I believe it is good for her to reach for some problems so that she can build her confidence in tackling challenging problems. In addition, we worked on her reading comprehension with a story that centered around poems and rhyming. We will complete the activities next session. Lastly, we worked on reading for fluency with a pleasure book she picked from her library at school.

Tutoring review by Eric in Patchogue, NY
Today was my first session with the student, and it went really well. We worked on getting her ready for her exam on Thursday. We spent all of our time going over the worksheet for the exam, which covered the beginning of E.M. She had a great attitude and was pleasure to work with. The biggest thing that I pointed out was the similarity of the equations between Mechanics and E.M and how to use them. Also, I pointed out how to use energy to her advantage and make problems easier. If she remembers what we talked about, she should do very well on her exam.

Tutoring review by Laura in Patchogue, NY
The student and I covered what she was having trouble with on the review guide. Specifically, we talked about analyzing the possible solutions of a system of inequalities from the graph, absolute value functions, and word problems involving these. We went over basic operations involving binomials, focusing on subtraction. We started going over linear factorization, and tonight, I will be emailing her sets of solutions for the last page of her review packet involving this topic, along with a clear set of step by step instructions on how to solve these types of problems.

Tutoring review by Steven in Patchogue, NY
I think this session was an overall success. We covered concepts such as interest rate, logarithm and exponential equations, and word problems, as well as Newton's law of cooling. These are the areas that the student said she had some concerns about and wanted to get straightened out for the test on Monday. I think she grasped each concept really well. We focused mainly on preparation for the chapter 4 test.
