Tutoring review by Johnita in Opa-locka, FL
We still had a lot of make up work that needed to be completed. This time we focused on Math and were able to get several Math worksheets completed that involved the Pythagorean theorem. My other student had more practice problems from her text for state testing prep, so we completed those. These also involved several problems using the Pythagorean theorem, and a number of volume/surface area questions. Both the girls have been doing their work well without any really problems or complaints, though all the make up work means that we don't get to focus on one thing for very long, which makes it hard to really gauge understanding.

Today's session we worked on a research paper titled Cyber-bullying, that is due on Friday. We reviewed what the student had already written, making necessary corrections. Next we outlined the rest of the paper. Once outlined, we researched additional websites for information, to be included in the paper. At the end of the session, we had written an additional 1 1/2 pages, bringing the total to 3 pages of a 5 page paper. I worked with the student on topics to be included in the conclusion of her paper. These topics were written out as well as the website. The student felt confident that she would have her paper completed by Friday. We scheduled the next tutoring session for Monday.

The student and I worked first on her homework for ELA, identifying imperative and exclamatory sentences. Then we came up with our own examples. We then reviewed her vocabulary and discussed the plot of Wonder.

Tutoring review by Elizabeth in Opa-locka, FL
The student did a fantastic job today. We started with Science and tried practice problems of each question type, breaking down how to approach each. We explored the concepts of putting on blinders to narrow our focus to what the question is specifically asking about, locating the information on the page, computing information given about experiments for ourselves (i.e. translating what is being stated into our own words and making sure we understand the processes), etc. Through this approach, she was able to answer every question correctly. Even when she gets stuck, the approach is to narrow the blinders even further to arrive at the correct answer. The object now is to practice so that we can increase speed. She plans to test out if she completes the conflicting viewpoints or research summaries passages more quickly. We then moved onto math and focused on geometry since she said she could use a refresher on that. We reviewed angle rules, similar triangles, congruency, etc. and worked through several problems successfully. She should be super proud of her work today!

The student had a few analogy questions on her practice test left, so we started with those. She understands how to find the connections; we just need to work more on vocabulary. When she knows the meanings of the words, she is able to find the relationships. We then worked on pacing on the math section and making the best use of her time, being careful to work only as far as necessary to find the answer from the given choices. We then reviewed several concepts such as finding slope, the different kinds of averages, percentages, ratios, proportions, and geometry concepts.

Tutoring review by Richard in Opa-locka, FL
The student and I continued to work on partial linear decompositions. He completed the homework problems from the text, but didn't start the problems from an assigned worksheet. He was a little rusty on his long division, which was required for a couple of problems, but we worked through them, and it came back to him.
