Tutoring review by Mihir in Mechanicville, NY
Today's lesson with the student went well. He just started college algebra, so this is where everything I taught him is coming to work. Today we went over the things he learned in class. For example, we covered fractions, mixed fractions, and improper fractions. His homework dealt with these kind of problems. Overall, the lesson went well. He was able to learn things and apply them quickly.

Tutoring review by Greg in Mechanicville, NY
The student had his Chapter 9 test this past Friday. He scored a 12.5/13 or 96% on the test, which is an A! He seemed quietly pleased with himself. We've now moved on to Chapter 10 which begins with polynomials. We spent a few minutes going over vocabulary words, such as monomial, polynomial, terms, order, etc. He had a worksheet that had him identify the order of a given polynomial and rearrange terms into descending order (i.e.. x^3 + x^2 + x + 1). He already seemed to understand this without having had much class time on the subject. There was an extra credit assignment that was given to them that was worth a full homework grade. We spent the remainder of our time working through this. It was a series of questions, 40 in total, in which he had to subtract like terms from two polynomials (i.e. (4x^6+5)-(-3x^6-4)). He was fully capable of doing these questions on his own. The other issue he seemed to have was reading each problem carefully, which seemed to be difficult because the questions were typed on the page close together. So if I covered up the questions that we weren't currently on, he was much better at not making errors with signs or something similar.

The student got his chapter 8 test back. He received a B, and once he turns in his corrections, he has the potential to get an A! We started by working on the test corrections. He only made one conceptual error, which involved solving a system of equations with the cancellation method. We reworked that one, and he got it right the first time. His other errors were not drawing the graph with enough curve, plugging in the wrong points, and making a multiplication error. After he finished his corrections, we moved on to today's homework. The class has started studying Boolean circuits, and his homework involved making truth tables and redesigning circuits with logic gates. He was able to mostly complete it during our session. He understands the concepts quite well, and should do fine when tested.

The student had a pending physics test, so we reviewed concepts about types of errors, reading graphs, using distance and time for calculating velocity. I had her go through some practice questions to review the concepts. She also answered questions on the study guide her teacher provided. I also gave her some concepts to memorize and work on to make flashcards.

Tutoring review by Chantal in Mechanicville, NY
The student began her studies for an algebra exam she will take next week. We reviewed the even questions in three pages of her textbook that covered scientific notation, decimal notation, and solving algebraic equations. The questions included changing decimals and whole numbers to scientific notation, finding the value of n in terms of 10 to the nth power to make a statement true, using order of operations to solve algebraic equations, and checking her work. This was an excellent session and she is prepared for her exam.
