Tutoring review by William in Hastings, NY
Today, the student and I worked on finding volumes of solids rotated about the x and y axes. We discussed the shell and the washer methods. After several times practicing using the shell method, I think the student has got a good handle on it. The washer method is a bit more complex and we didn't get to that until towards the end of our session. Before ending our session, I set up a similar problem and tried to summarize the steps for him. I'm hoping that in continuing to practice, he will feel more comfortable with it. If he still has questions or confusion, we will revisit it next week.

During our session, the student continued working through his calculus assignments, dealing with the topic of finding the area between two curves. He worked through each step to identify the bounds of the region, determine if the upper and lower boundaries intersect anywhere along the boundary, and carry out the integral necessary to calculate the area between two curves. Once again, he understood the material very well, identified intersections, determined upper and lower boundaries, and evaluated integrals very easily. He and I worked through two word problems near the end of the session, and he did a good job identifying which variables were denoted by certain phrases or equations in the written explanation of a question. His spring break is coming up, and we plan on meeting again on Monday.

Tutoring review by Steven in Hastings, NY
Today we went over deductive and inductive reasoning as well as conditional/ converse/ inverse/ contrapositive statements. He had most of the problems with the latter. We went over many problems. I tried to show him a trick with those problems on how each one can be rewritten to show how each was related. He has a quiz on this tomorrow. He started to understand it by the end of the session.

Tutoring review by Kaiwen in Hastings, NY
The student and I went over topics on more convergence/divergence tests in Calculus 2. In particular, we did a lot of practice problems on comparison tests, limit comparison tests, and ratio and root tests. To help her determine which tests to use, I tried to identify the properties of each test and the applied problems so that she can find a pattern. We will do more practice next time, so she feels comfortable deciding the correct tests to use.
