We reviewed problems from the student's homework, which included calculating confidence intervals and z-scores. We also went over her rough draft for her week 2 essay, which required her to pose a research question incorporating the chapter material in the response criteria. She is very motivated and resourceful. Next week we plan on covering the next set of homework problems, the next written assignment, and possibly the rest of the first week's homework problems.

Tutoring review by Chris in Hampton Manor, NY
The student and I spent this session working on applications of derivatives. We started with the simplest application, finding minima and maxima of functions. After working through several problems we decided to move on to slightly more challenging material and began working optimization problems. We went over the basic concepts of maximization problems, generating a function to optimize and using the various constraints given to reduce that function to a single variable function. Then we solved a number of problems. This section is a challenging one as each problem demands some careful thought in addition to using mathematical techniques.

Tutoring review by Kendra in Hampton Manor, NY
Today I started the session with Student A. She needed help reviewing for her history exam. We went over important people, terminology, and important events from the middle ages. She had already made some flashcards, but we went through her whole study guide together and she did well explaining the historical events and their importance. I spent the second half of the session with Student B. She wanted help with her math. They are still working with linear equations so we practiced using two points to find the slope and equations. She already had mastered finding slope from two points, but needed some guidance with using the point-slope formula. She worked through her homework and we looked at some work they did in class that she was unsure about. Overall both the girls did great.

Today, we finished the rest of the test 3 review (which included topics like asymptotes, partial fraction decomposition, and compound vs continuous interest). The study guide we have been preparing is pretty much completed with all the topics from the first 3 tests. Next week, we'll continue with the review (going back to some of the earlier material) as well as practice partial fraction decomposition since we went through it a bit quickly.

Tutoring review by James in Hampton Manor, NY
We started the session with a 25-question test covering all the topics we have discussed since the first tutoring session. The student earned an 85% on the this exam; he lost the majority of his points on converting fractions to decimals. We are going to review the concept of converting fractions to decimals at the next session. He also struggled with the word problem that required him to create an equation to arrive at the answer. We will work on these concepts over the next few session. On the positive note, he got every single question that involved fraction operations correct. I think he has really made progress in understanding fractions.
