Recent Doral Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by James in Doral, FL
The student reported that he felt confident about his performance on the Latin quiz. Indeed, in an e-mail exchange between his mother and his Latin teacher, it was reported he scored an 83%, which is great news. This will bolster his Latin grade. After discussing a recent algebra quiz with the student, we spent the balance of the time working on Algebraic expressions for the balance of the time. The subject matter was recursive sequences and an introduction to linear graphs. He picked up on the procedures quickly and understood how they translated into the graph. On the review problem, which covered previously learned material, he performed well, talking me through the procedures of the problem and executing them without any hints or prompts.

Tutoring review by Scott in Doral, FL
Today we covered function transformations, inverse functions, combining functions, and determining the domain and range of functions. The student seemed to have a good understanding of the material. She slipped up a couple times with small things like including a "+" sign where there should have been a "-" sign. We talked about her paying closer attention so she doesn't miss a point because of this simple mistake. Overall, it was a smooth session. I'd say of the topics covered today, the inverse functions were the trickiest , but she caught on quickly.

Tutoring review by Dr. Melissa in Doral, FL
This session covered a variety of American history events and people: American Civil War, American businessmen/ inventors (Edison, Ford, Carnegie, Morgan, etc.), Dawes Act and Sedition Act, and Malcolm X. The student can bring a note card for this exam. I used teaching strategies which included evaluating, comparing and contrasting, and critiquing. Extra practice was given to skim the Malcolm X material for key words and read a secondary source synopsis since the test highlights some other resources than the main textbook.

Today the student took the final full-length math test and scored a 30--four points higher than his original target of 26. We also took a look at the science section, and he scored well on the mini-quizzes. We ended the session with a game plan for Science practice between now and Saturday. He has worked hard, and he is ready to go.
